Teen Charged After Ambulance Hit in Serious M2 Crash Near Gillingham

A teenager has been charged with multiple offences after a police pursuit ended in a collision with an ambulance near the M2 at Gillingham on Friday, 29 August.

Dangerous Driving Pursuit

Kent Police said officers spotted a blue VW Golf being driven dangerously on the coastbound carriageway near junction 3 shortly before 9pm.

When officers activated their blue lights, the vehicle failed to stop and exited the motorway at junction 4 (A278 Hoath Way). Moments later, the Golf collided with an ambulance on the roundabout connecting the slip road with the A278.

Emergency Response

Emergency services rushed to the scene. Two ambulance crew members were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Three people — two men and a teenage boy — were arrested after receiving medical attention.

Charges Brought

On Sunday, 31 August, Harry Foster-Smith, 19, of Brunswick Street, Bexleyheath, was charged with:

  • Three counts of causing injury by dangerous driving

  • Aggravated taking of a vehicle without consent

  • Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence

  • Driving without insurance

  • Possession of cannabis

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 1 September.

An 18-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy, both from London, have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses and motorists with dashcam footage to come forward.
