Shock Find: Firearms and Cocaine Discovered During Routine Electrician Job

On 3 November 2020, electricians working at a property in Icknield Close uncovered a hidden nightmare. While carrying out routine work, they accidentally disturbed a bag, spilling its dangerous contents – an adapted firearm and a large haul of cocaine. Quick to act, the workmen alerted police who swiftly attended the scene and seized the items.

Double Arrest After Police Wait for Homeowner

Officers waited at the address for the homeowner to return. Soon after, 50-year-old Timothy Smith was arrested. A further search of the property unearthed another firearm and a canister of CS gas. Smith faced multiple charges related to firearms and drug offences.

Forensic analysis later linked Jack Kirkham, 21, from Station Road, Arlesey, to the conspiracy. His fingerprint was found on the drug packaging and his DNA was discovered on the trigger of one of the firearms. Kirkham was also arrested and charged with possession of a firearm and intent to supply drugs.

Court Verdicts: Long Sentences for Smith and Kirkham

After a week-long trial at St Albans Crown Court, both men were found guilty. Timothy Smith’s convictions included:

  • Possession with intent to supply Class A drug (cocaine)
  • Two counts of possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Possession of a CS gas canister

Jack Kirkham was found guilty of:

  • Possession with intent to supply Class A drug (cocaine)
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm

On 24 November 2021, Timothy Smith was sentenced to 11 years and 3 months in prison. Jack Kirkham received 8 years and 6 months.

Police Statement: Dangerous Weapons Off the Streets

Detective Inspector Michael Ball, from the North Herts Local Crime Unit, said: “We are extremely pleased that the weapons and large amount of class A drugs have been removed from the streets. The dangerous weapons, that will now be destroyed, are out of the hands of criminals.”

“The sentences passed will hopefully remind people of the seriousness of these offences and act as a deterrent to those who deal drugs in our county. We will continue to work to make Hertfordshire safer for the public and hostile for criminals.”
