Cat Caught in Illegal Gin Trap in Lydney
On Wednesday 26 October, Belle the cat was found trapped near her home in Harrison Way, Lydney. The trap is believed to be a banned Gin Trap, outlawed since 1958 for causing gruesome injuries.
Banned Trap Inflicts Serious Injury
Despite the pain, Belle managed to drag herself home and was rushed to the vets. Sadly, her leg might have to be amputated due to the damage.
Police Condemn Illegal Trap Use
PC Cath McDay from the Rural Crime Team slammed those responsible. She said: “To witness a pet in this situation is horrific – no one should have to go through this because of a careless person setting illegal traps.”
PC McDay explained, “Gin Traps, banned under the Pests Act 1954, use spring-operated jaws with teeth to snare animals by leg or head, causing horrific injuries. Setting these traps is a serious offence, and the suffering caused to Belle is unacceptable.”
Police Appeal for Information from Locals
The police urge pet owners in Lydney to stay vigilant. Anyone with information about the trap or its setter is asked to contact Gloucestershire Police.
