100-Metre Cordon After Mystery Item Found
Homes on a quiet residential street in Plymouth were evacuated today after bomb disposal officers were called in to deal with a suspicious item. Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed a man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm without a certificate.
A 100-metre cordon was set up around College Avenue in Mutley following a police warrant in the area. Officers are treating the item seriously and have brought in a Royal Navy bomb disposal team to make the device safe.
Police Urge Calm, No Wider Threat
Detective Inspector Kev Morley told PlymouthLive:
“In the course of searches we’ve identified something we want to make safe and as a precaution EOD have recommended a 100m cordon. Our priority is the long-term and sustained protection of the public and we needed the item to be tested by a suitably trained person in EOD. At this point in time there is no wider threat to the public.”
Road Closures and Delays Expected
Connaught Avenue has also been closed, with a bomb disposal van spotted at the scene. Plymouth Highways warned that the cordon around College Avenue is likely to cause traffic delays. Further updates will be provided as police continue their investigation.
Man Arrested Following Warrant
Police carried out a warrant in the area before making the arrest. The man remains in custody as investigations continue into the suspicious item found on the street.
