A 36-year-old man from Thetford, Norfolk, has been sentenced to two years in prison after assaulting a woman in West Suffolk, causing actual bodily harm. Matthew Barrett of Anne Bartholomew Road was found guilty at Ipswich Magistrates Court on 1 April and sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court on 6 May. The victim, known to Barrett, suffered a fractured cheekbone, a cut lip, and an eye injury that affected her vision.
Serious Injuries Sustained
The assaulted woman sustained multiple injuries including a fractured cheekbone and damage to her eye, highlighting the severity of the attack earlier this year. The injuries have had a lasting impact on her vision.
Breach Of Suspended Sentence
Barrett’s conviction represents a breach of a suspended sentence imposed in 2024 for a previous grievous bodily harm offence. The court imposed the custodial sentence due to this violation.
Restraining Order Issued
Alongside the two-year prison sentence, Barrett has been issued a restraining order effective until further notice, preventing contact with the victim.
Police Praise Victim Courage
PC Callum Parker, the officer leading the case, praised the victim for staying engaged with the police and courageous through the legal process. He added: “I hope that knowing he is behind bars will offer her some comfort, safe in the knowledge that he cannot harm her or anyone else.”
Support For Abuse Victims
PC Parker urged anyone experiencing abuse to reach out for help, stating the police have specially trained officers to offer support with sensitivity and compassion. Victims can contact the Suffolk Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0800 977 5690 or call 999 in an emergency.
