An 11-year-old girl has died after her body was found in a river following a major search and rescue operation in Midlothian. Emergency services were called to the Gore Glen area near Gorebridge shortly after concerns were raised for the schoolgirl at around 12.40pm on Thursday, August 6. A major search operation was launched involving emergency crews as efforts were made to locate the child. Tragically, the girl’s body was discovered in Gore Water near Shank Bridge at around 4.25pm. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family have been informed.

Police are treating the death as ‘unexplained’

Police Scotland has confirmed that the girl’s death is currently being treated as unexplained. Officers are carrying out enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of concern for an 11-year-old girl in the Gore Glen area, near Gorebridge around 12.40pm on Thursday, 6 August, 2026. “The body of the girl was found in the Gore Water near to Shank Bridge around 4.25pm. “She was pronounced dead at the scene and her family are aware. “Her death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.” The incident prompted a significant emergency services response in and around Gore Glen Woodland Park. Police enquiries remain ongoing.
