Massive Tower Block Blaze in Walworth: 70 Firefighters Battle Flames on 11th Floor

A huge fire ripped through an 11th-floor flat in a south-east London tower block this afternoon, sparking a massive emergency response. Around 70 firefighters and 10 engines rushed to the scene on Hillingdon Street, Walworth, to tackle the blaze tearing through Brawne House on the Brandon Estate.

Flames Engulf Flat on 11th Floor

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed the fire broke out just before 2pm in a flat on the 11th floor of the 17-storey block. Crews arrived to find the flat “completely alight,” sparking swift action to contain the flames.

‘Highly Visible Fire’ Draws Crowds and Emergency Calls

Station Commander Tony Perks described the fire as “highly visible,” with over 40 emergency calls flooding the brigade from concerned locals. He warned:

“This was a very visible fire and the area became increasingly busy as a result. People are advised to continue to avoid the area while crews damp down remaining hotspots.”

Smoke billowed from the building while firefighters worked on raised platforms to blast water directly into the burning flat. Spectators gathered in large numbers, adding to congestion around the scene.

Resident Escapes Unharmed; Fire Under Control But Vigilance Remains

A woman escaped the flat before firefighters arrived, and thankfully, there are no reports of injuries so far. The London Ambulance Service stayed on standby as a precaution.

Firefighters from Dowgate, Dockhead, Soho, Whitechapel, and other stations remain on site to monitor hotspots. The blaze is now under control, but crews will stay for some time to prevent flare-ups.

Public Urged to Avoid Area Amid Smoke and Delays

Authorities are urging people to steer clear of the area due to lingering smoke and road congestion. Bus routes in the vicinity may face delays or be diverted until the situation is fully cleared.
