International Crackdown Shuts Down Criminal Cybermarket Genesis
An explosive global operation led by the FBI and Dutch National Police saw the notorious Genesis Market offline as of 4 April. This takedown spanned 17 countries, striking a severe blow to online fraudsters.
Millions of Stolen Identities Removed
Genesis Market was a dark web hub, trading around 80 million stolen credentials and digital fingerprints from over two million victims worldwide. The platform allowed criminals to buy and sell detailed digital identities, making it easier than ever to defraud individuals and businesses.
UK Police Make 24 Arrests in Coordinated Raids
The UK National Crime Agency (NCA) identified hundreds of local users of Genesis. This led to 31 executed warrants across the country by the NCA, Regional Cyber Crime Units, and local police forces. So far, 24 people have been arrested, including two men aged 34 and 36 in Grimsby, suspected of offences under the Computer Misuse Act and fraud.
Rob Jones, NCA Director General NECC and Threat Leadership, said:
“Genesis Market was one of the most significant criminal platforms. Its removal delivers a huge blow to criminals worldwide. Targeting such infrastructure is key to protecting the public from identity theft and financial fraud.”
How Genesis Market Worked – And How It Tricked Victims
- Genesis sold ‘bots’—digital profiles harvested from malware-infected devices.
- These bots included sensitive data: cookies, saved logins, autofill info, updated in real time.
- Prices ranged from 70 cents to hundreds of dollars, with financial info fetching the highest sums.
- Criminals could access victims’ bank accounts, make purchases, or launder money.
- The platform provided a custom browser to perfectly mimic victims’ devices, bypassing security checks.
- Using personal details from stolen accounts, fraudsters could manipulate victims into handing over money via romance or investment scams.
