Baby Born on M25 Slip Road in Dramatic Police Rescue
Officers Rush to Aid Woman in Labour
Kent Police faced an extraordinary emergency on the M25 when officers helped deliver a baby on the Darenth Interchange slip road. At 2.43pm on Monday, July 25, 2022, PC Aimee Smith and PC Nathan Southern found a woman in active labour stranded in a car on the busy motorway.
Sergeant Medic Steps In Amid Heavy Traffic
Sergeant Brett Barham, a trained police medic, was called to the scene. “When I arrived, the baby girl had just been born into the hands of the officers,” said PS Barham from the Swale Local Policing Team. Due to severe traffic congestion, an ambulance couldn’t reach them quickly enough to help mother and newborn.
Speedy Hospital Transfer Saves the Day
With no time to waste, officers switched on their lights and rushed mum and her partner to the nearest hospital. “We left the family in the care of medical professionals, where I understand they are doing well,” added PS Barham.
Police Praise and Memorable Moment
“I’m grateful we were nearby to assist,” said PS Barham. PC Southern of the Rural Task Force called it “one of those shifts that I will remember for the rest of my career.”
