Urgent Repairs Planned for Crumbling Coastal Defences on Isle of Wight
The Environment Agency is gearing up to refurbish a 1.7km stretch of ageing coastal defences along Embankment Road, from Bembridge Sailing Club to St Helens. This vital project aims to tackle flooding and erosion risks threatening the area’s safety.
Cracks Show in Coastal Embankment
The seawall protecting Embankment Road is showing its age, with some sections near collapse. If left unrepaired, parts could breach, endangering the B3395 road and the adjacent footpath by the Solent.
Work to Cause Some Disruption
Emily Gordon, programme manager for the Environment Agency in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, warned locals about upcoming works:
“From 21 September to 6 October, there will be two-way traffic control on the B3395 to minimise road closures. Some footpath closures will also be necessary. We apologise for any inconvenience.”
“Refurbishing these defences will help them withstand the extreme weather linked to climate change. The upgrades will make the sea defences more resilient against rising sea levels and harsher storms, protecting both the community and local wildlife habitats.”
Climate Change Makes Upgrades Critical
With climate change driving more severe storms and rising seas, the Environment Agency stresses the need to strengthen coastal protections now. The project is a key step in safeguarding the Isle of Wight’s coastline for generations to come.
