Childminder Killed in Horrific Beach Buggy Scarf Accident
The family of Gillian Sandle, 62, have paid a heartbreaking tribute after the beloved childminder was tragically killed in a freak beach buggy accident on Hayling Island.
Scarf Caught in Beach Buggy Wheel
Gillian was a passenger in an open-top blue Volkswagen beach buggy when her scarf got caught in the rear wheel. The vehicle was being driven along North Street, just a stone’s throw from the sea, when the horrific incident happened.
Despite frantic efforts from passersby who performed CPR at the scene and quick responses from paramedics, Gillian was rushed to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham but sadly later died.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
Hampshire Constabulary confirmed they are not treating the death as suspicious but inquiries are ongoing. Sergeant Melanie Adcock urged anyone who saw the tragedy unfold to come forward, stating it happened during a busy period with many Christmas shoppers nearby.
Family Heartbroken by Sudden Loss
“As a family we’re totally devastated at the sudden and tragic loss of such a wonderful lady,” the family said. “This is very hard to come to terms with, and we ask that as a family we are left alone to grieve.”
The driver of the buggy, a man in his 60s, was uninjured. The beach buggy involved is designed for both road and sand use, featuring larger, wider wheels.
