Families were left reeling after a deadly fire tore through a car on Clarence Avenue, Clapham, in the early hours of Tuesday, December 27. Emergency crews were scrambled just after 2.20am following reports of a vehicle ablaze.
Despite frantic efforts by firefighters and paramedics, the occupant was tragically found dead inside the burning car.
Neighbours Wake to Flames and Sirens
The terrifying incident jolted nearby residents awake. One neighbour recalled:
“Around 3 a.m., I turned off my light and soon saw flashing lights outside. By 3.30 a.m., I pulled back the curtain. Huge red flames were shooting from the house. It was horrific.”

The London Fire Brigade’s fire investigation team has been called in to probe the cause of the blaze. The Met Police confirmed officers arrived at 2:34am after multiple calls reporting a car fire in Clarence Avenue.
A Met Police spokesperson said:
“After extinguishing the fire, a person’s body was found inside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are working to identify the individual. The death is being treated as unexpected, and further enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances.”
