Chaos at Liverpool FC Parade: Man Arrested After Ford Galaxy Mows Down Crowd
A 53-year-old man is in custody, suspected of attempted murder and drug-driving after a Ford Galaxy crashed into fans during Liverpool FC’s Premier League trophy parade on Water Street.
Mass Panic and Injuries at Liverpool Parade
Merseyside Police revealed 65 people were hurt, including four children. Around 50 victims were rushed to hospital, some with serious injuries, though thankfully all are now stable.
The horror unfolded just after 6 PM on Monday, 26 May, when the suspect reportedly followed an ambulance through a road closure before ploughing into the packed crowd.
How Did the Incident Unfold?
Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims explained the Ford tailgated emergency services responding to a separate medical call. Once on Water Street, the driver got into a scuffle with fans before reversing into bystanders and then deliberately speeding through the throng, triggering chaos and panic.
Social media footage shows the car weaving through dense crowds, knocking over men, women, and children as horrified onlookers screamed. Firefighters had to free four people trapped under the vehicle, including a child.
Swift Arrest and Serious Charges
Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill confirmed the suspect — a white British man from West Derby — was quickly arrested and remains in custody. He faces multiple charges, including:
- Attempted murder
- Drug-driving
- Dangerous driving
Police stressed the attack is not being treated as terrorism. Forensic teams and neighbouring forces are assisting the ongoing investigation.
Shock, Solidarity, and Security Questions
Victim Jack Trotter called it “the most horrifying incident I’ve ever experienced” and counted himself lucky to survive.
Showing solidarity, Princess Anne visited emergency responders at Royal Liverpool University Hospital. King Charles and the Prince and Princess of Wales expressed “deep sadness,” while Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: “Scenes of joy turned to horror. The whole country stands with Liverpool.”
Security experts slammed the event for poor planning, warning Water Street’s access wasn’t properly blocked. Liverpool Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram admitted the street “was not a designated route for traffic.” Counter-terror advisor Lee Doddridge called the failings “alarming”.
Call for Witnesses and What’s Next
Merseyside Police urge anyone with information or footage to call 101 quoting incident number 1114/26MAY, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111.
The investigation continues as victims remain in hospital and calls grow louder for tightened security at public events across the UK.
