Two men have been arrested following a dramatic afternoon clash with police in Newham that left two officers injured and hospitalised.
Police Stop Car, Sudden Violence Erupts
At around 4.30pm on Thursday 16 August, Met’s Violent Crime Task Force officers stopped a vehicle on Romford Road, E12, to question its two male occupants. The men immediately got out, sparking a violent struggle. During the fracas, a female officer broke a bone in her right hand. A male colleague suffered ligament damage in his hand, needing surgery.
Threatened with Suspected Firearm
The pair allegedly threatened officers with what is believed to be a firearm – though no weapon has yet been recovered. One man, 25, was arrested at the scene. His 23-year-old accomplice tried to flee but was caught nearby in E13 after a garden search.
Met Officers Praise Bravery, Call for Witnesses
“This incident once again shows the bravery of Met officers, who acted with the utmost professionalism in a tough situation,” said Detective Superintendent Sean Yates of the Violent Crime Task Force. “The officers were confronted by two aggressive men who intimated they were armed. They put themselves in harm’s way to protect the public.”
