Nurse Arrested After Taking 97-Year-Old Grandma from Care Home Amid Lockdown Fury
Nine Months Apart Ends in Arrest
After being separated for nine agonising months, a qualified nurse was arrested for trying to take her 97-year-old mother—who suffers from dementia—out of a care home. The elderly woman’s health is rapidly declining, but authorities forced her back, sparking outrage.
Emotional Scene Caught on Camera
Leandra captured the tense moment police confronted her family in a car park, moments after quietly wheeling her grandmother, Tina Thornborough, out of the care home she’d lived in for nearly a year.
“So let’s just make this very clear, my nan—my 97-year-old nan—we haven’t seen her for nine months and now she’s being taken back by force,” Leandra said on video.
Her mother, a 73-year-old nurse, wanted to care for her at home but was arrested for refusing to return her to the home.
Frustration Boils Over After Bureaucracy Fails
Leandra criticised the “irrational rules” that have kept families apart during lockdown despite clear harm to loved ones’ mental and physical health. She revealed:
- They hold Power of Attorney only for finances, not wellbeing.
- Official channels ignored their concerns despite clear signs of decline.
- The care home sent her grandmother back from hospital without consent.
“The system is failing,” Leandra said, calling for relatives to be granted key-worker status and access to private rooms for care and visits.
Police: A Tough Job in a Tough Situation
Assistant Chief Constable Chris Noble from Humberside Police said:
“We acted on reports of assault and that a woman had been taken from a care home legally responsible for her care.”
“The 73-year-old was briefly restrained until calm was restored. The elderly lady was safely returned to the home. She and her daughter thanked officers afterwards.”
The police acknowledged the difficult emotions involved and promised ongoing support for all parties.
Heartfelt Plea for Change
Leandra urged people to “challenge and change” rules that harm families and described the ordeal as a Kafkaesque nightmare of fear and bureaucracy. She hopes fearless truth and compassion will end this inhumane situation once and for all.
