Cryptosporidium Outbreak Sparks Boil Water Warning Across Devon

South West Water has slapped a boil water advisory on Brixham, Boohay, Kingswear, Roseland, and north-east Paignton after a suspected cryptosporidium outbreak. This nasty waterborne parasite has caused a spike in illnesses, with residents complaining of diarrhoea, vomiting, and stomach cramps.

Hundreds Fall Ill as Parasite Hits Water Supply

Reports say hundreds are suffering symptoms linked to cryptosporidium, pushing public health officials into urgent action. The parasite, often found in contaminated water, triggers severe tummy troubles, including nausea and fever.

  • 16 cases confirmed so far in Devon
  • 70+ others currently under investigation
  • Typical symptoms: low-grade fever, loss of appetite, lasting up to two weeks

South West Water initially insisted water tests showed no contamination. But new findings revealed “small traces” of the parasite, forcing them to urge locals to boil all drinking water as a safety net.

Emergency Measures and Local Fury

The water company is setting up bottled water stations in affected areas and prioritising deliveries for vulnerable customers. Meanwhile, residents have vented their frustration online, especially in Higher Brixham and Hillhead.

Many face missed school days, lost wages, and severe dehydration due to clear diarrhoea. The outbreak is disrupting daily life and hitting the community hard.

Officials Step In as Investigation Continues

Totnes MP Anthony Mangnall is working closely with South West Water and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to crack down on the contamination source. The UKHSA has yet to issue an official statement.

Residents are urged to report symptoms to health authorities and follow strict hygiene rules to avoid catching or spreading the parasite.
