Gunfire Shatters Funeral in North West London
At 1.30pm on Saturday, January 14, chaos erupted on Phoenix Road, NW1, when gunshots were fired near a church funeral service.
Three Women and Young Girl Shot
Police and emergency crews raced to the scene, including London’s Air Ambulance. Three women aged 48, 54, and 41 were rushed to hospital. Their injuries are mostly non-life threatening, though the 48-year-old faces potentially life-changing damage.
Shortly afterwards, a 7-year-old girl was also taken to a central London hospital with injuries linked to the same violent attack. Her condition remains unknown.
Tragic Setting: Funeral for Mother and Daughter
The shooting happened outside a church hosting a funeral for Fresia Calderon, 50, and her daughter Sara Sanchez, 20, who died just a month apart. Fresia collapsed and died after arriving on a flight from Colombia in November, with doctors attributing her death to a rare pulmonary embolism. Sara was diagnosed with leukaemia at 17 and died 25 days later.
A grieving family member said Sara “gave up all hope” after losing her mother.
Investigation Underway, No Arrests Yet
Police believe shots were fired from a moving vehicle that sped away. A heavy police presence remains on Phoenix Road as officers investigate.
London Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 1.28pm with reports of a shooting in Camden. We sent multiple crews and the Air Ambulance. Four people were treated on scene. One was seriously injured and taken to a major trauma centre as priority.”
