Four Arrested in Multi-Million Pound UK Phone Scam Sting

Two men and two women have been busted in a major crackdown on a multi-million pound phone scam duping UK taxpayers.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) swooped on five East and West London addresses on Tuesday, 28 July. Officers seized £10,000 in cash, alongside laptops, desktops, mobiles, and a haul of SIM cards.

HMRC Warns of Ruthless Tax Scammers Preying on the Vulnerable

Richard Mayer, Assistant Director of HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service, revealed how these crooks fool victims:

“Criminals use a range of techniques in tax-related phone scams, including calling unsuspecting taxpayers to offer a bogus tax refund, or threatening them with arrest if they don’t immediately pay fictitious tax bills.

“These scams often target the elderly and vulnerable. We are a well-known brand, which criminals abuse to try and add credibility to their scams.”

HMRC urges taxpayers to stay alert and report suspicious calls immediately.
