London’s Electric Fire Engine Still Grounded After Three Years – Not a Single Callout!
Zero Emission Fire Truck Hits a Dead End
The UK’s trailblazing electric fire engine, nicknamed ZEPA1 (Zero Emission Capable Pumping Appliance), was unveiled with great fanfare by London Fire Brigade in 2022. It promised a frontline debut within a year. But nearly three years on, it’s yet to respond to a single fire or even a minor incident – not a sniff of action.
Stationed at Hammersmith Fire Station, ZEPA1 remains stuck in trial mode, gathering dust instead of fighting flames. LFB and local firefighters confirm the vehicle hasn’t been mobilised once, sparking questions about its real-world readiness.
Meet ZEPA1: Specs of the Silent Sentinel
- Launched: 2022
- Battery Capacity: 280kWh
- Range: 200 miles
- Water Tank: 1,750 litres
- Foam Capacity: 100 litres
- Back-up Engine: Petrol-powered “range extender”
What’s Holding It Back?
The ambitious project has faced several hurdles:
- Charging Woes: A 150kW charger was supposedly installed at Hammersmith, but even staff can’t locate it.
- Training & Upgrades: ZEPA1 awaits modifications to fit new breathing gear, pushing deployment further into the future.
- Tech Doubts: Electric engines still don’t have a proven track record handling the harsh realities of fire response.

Calls Ignored: No Action Since January 2025
Since the start of 2025, Hammersmith crews tackled over 1,150 emergencies – yet ZEPA1 has sat idle through every single one.
Symbol of Hope or Costly White Elephant?
The plan was for ZEPA1 to be “shadowed” by a diesel engine on real calls during its rookie year. That never happened. With no updates and no deployments, sceptics ask whether the electric fire engine is a pioneering breakthrough or just taxpayer money down the drain.
Supplier Emergency One has stayed silent on the vehicle’s current status and any technical glitches. Meanwhile, London Fire Brigade insists the truck’s “proactive testing” continues and lessons are shared with other UK fire services.
Some Green Wins Amid the Doubts
Not all’s lost in the eco revolution. London Fire Brigade has successfully switched all its officer vehicles to electric, rolling out VW ID.3 models as part of its 2024 target.
What’s Next for ZEPA1?
With EV tech advancing fast, ZEPA1 risks becoming obsolete before it even leaves the station. Calls grow louder for London Fire Brigade and City Hall to deliver a frank update and clear future roadmap.
The Mayor of London’s Office was approached for comment but declined to respond.
