DVLA Shakes Up International Driving Permits – Change Kicks in April 1
The DVLA has blasted out an urgent alert to all UK drivers. From April 1, the way you get your International Driving Permit (IDP) is about to change – big time.
IDPs Move from Post Office to PayPoint
If you’re planning to drive abroad – in over 140 countries including hotspot destinations like Australia and Canada – you usually need an IDP to stay legal. Up until now, you snapped one up at the Post Office. But next month, you’ll have to pop into a PayPoint store instead.
Swansway Motor Group explains: “To get an IDP, drivers must visit a PayPoint store with their driving licence, passport, and a passport photo. This shift to PayPoint outlets for IDP distribution represents a significant change, emphasizing the importance of staying informed about driving regulations both domestically and internationally.”
Don’t Get Caught Out – Check Before You Travel
Motoring experts warn drivers to stay sharp and plan ahead. Not every country demands an IDP but many do – so it pays to check your destination’s rules before jetting off. Failing to have the right paperwork could land you in hot water.
With the new system looming, drivers are urged to familiarise themselves with the updated process and secure their permit sooner rather than later.
Stay Updated to Avoid Travel Hassles
Swansway Motor Group has also urged drivers to keep an eye on any further changes and to prioritise compliance for a smooth driving experience overseas. As April 1 ticks closer, don’t be the one caught off guard at the border.
