Outrage as Tribute Train Vandalised — Covid Memorial Targeted

A South Western Railway (SWR) train painted with a special livery honouring railway workers lost during the Covid-19 pandemic has been vandalised, sparking fury and urgent calls for action.

The defaced train, numbered 450067, was exposed on social media by Anthony Furnival, who slammed the damage as a “desecration of a memorial.”

“450067 has been vandalised – as the livery is a tribute to your colleagues lost in Covid, could you prioritise its cleaning, as this has quite literally desecrated a memorial. Maybe @BTP could take stronger actions in these circumstances?”

SWR Rushes to Clean Up as Police Plea for Witnesses

SWR acted swiftly, confirming their fleet team was alerted to clean the damaged train immediately.

“Thank you, Anthony. I have reported this to our fleet team so that they can get this cleaned.” — @SW_Help

The British Transport Police (BTP) appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

“We’re sorry you’ve witnessed this. If you haven’t reported this, we urge you to do so by either texting us at 61016 or by calling 0800 405040.”

But Furnival insisted SWR should consider taking stronger action, stressing the train’s importance as a memorial to frontline staff lost in the pandemic.

Public Shock and Demand for Tougher Penalties

Social media erupted with anger over the disrespect shown, with many demanding harsher penalties for anyone caught defacing memorials.

  • Calls for BTP to boost patrols at depots and stations to stop future attacks
  • Outcry over repeated vandalism on the UK’s rail network
  • Pressure mounting for better enforcement to protect public tributes

So far, SWR has committed to restoring the train’s appearance but has yet to confirm if they will pursue legal action against the vandals.

This incident highlights ongoing struggles to safeguard public memorials and rail property from damaging attacks.
