Chaos Hits as 180,000 UK Benefit Claimants Lose Pay for Missing Universal Credit Deadline

More than 180,000 UK households have had their benefit payments abruptly stopped after failing to switch from six legacy benefits to Universal Credit on time. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) warned claimants they must act fast or lose out.

Massive Managed Migration Underway – But Thousands Falling Through the Cracks

Since March 2024, the DWP has sent over 800,000 migration notices telling claimants they have three months to claim Universal Credit or risk losing support. Yet between July 2022 and March 2024, 184,120 people missed this crucial deadline and saw their legacy benefits cut.

Tax expert Andy Wood broke down the scale: “Between July 2022 and March 2024, 824,050 individuals in over half a million households across England, Wales, and Scotland were issued migration notices. The bulk of these—821,430—were tax credit claimants.”

Which Benefits Are Being Scrapped?

  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)

Wood added: “Out of the 824,050 claimants notified, 400,940 (49%) have successfully switched to Universal Credit. Of those, 60% receive transitional protection, keeping their payments steady. Another 238,990 (29%) are still in the process, but shockingly, 184,120 (22%) have had their old claims closed with no switch made.”

Calls for Compassion as Vulnerable Claimants Left in the Lurch

Wood urged the DWP to rethink its harsh approach. “Cutting benefits from 184,000 people is a crisis. Many face serious personal struggles and need support—not just targets met. The government must prioritise people’s welfare above all.”

Campaigners warn the transition process risks plunging vulnerable families into hardship. Claimants are urged to respond immediately to migration notices and get help from local Jobcentres to avoid losing out.

The DWP insists it’s working to smooth the Universal Credit switch and reduce disruption, but thousands remain in limbo as the crackdown on legacy benefits ramps up.
