Frank Bruno Rushed to Hospital After Falling Ill Mid-Flight
British boxing legend Frank Bruno, 63, was rushed to hospital after falling seriously ill during a long-haul flight. The former world heavyweight champion became unwell aboard a Qatar Airways flight from London Heathrow to Doha on March 3, forcing an emergency diversion and sparking nearly two weeks of medical treatment abroad.
Sudden Health Scare on Flight to Thailand
Bruno, en route to a speaking tour in Thailand, started sweating profusely and showed fever-like symptoms during the flight. Passengers and crew were alarmed as his condition deteriorated quickly.
“Frank was fine when he boarded the plane but quickly went downhill during the flight. He was in a really bad way,” a source close to Bruno revealed.
Upon landing in Doha, medics treated Bruno immediately and transferred him to Al Wakra Hospital. Doctors initially feared meningitis, but tests confirmed he had a viral infection.
Cancelled Tour and Medical Hold-Up
Bruno had been lined up for four events across Thailand — Pattaya, Bangkok, Hua Hin, and Koh Phangan — all of which were cancelled due to his health emergency. Hospital officials reportedly held onto his passport to ensure he stayed under medical supervision until fully recovered.
“By the end of his time in Qatar, Frank was getting frustrated as he was bored and wanted to leave. In typical Frank fashion, he was more worried about supposedly letting his fans down,” the source added.
Throughout the ordeal, Bruno’s PA Paul Hunter stayed by his side.
Two Weeks in Hospital, Now Back Home
After nearly two weeks in hospital, Bruno was discharged and has returned to the UK where he is continuing to recover. His team confirmed his planned appearance at Manchester’s Hotel Football this Sunday has been cancelled.
However, he is aiming to resume public events in May and June, including an “Evening With Frank Bruno” at Birmingham City FC.
Manager’s Update and Mental Health Clarification
Bruno’s manager, Dave Davies, commented:
“Frank was flying out to work in Thailand when he was taken ill on the plane at Doha. Medical crew attended Frank on the plane and at hospital. He’s now recovering and hopes to be back at work as soon as possible.”
Sources close to Bruno have confirmed the incident is not linked to mental health problems, a subject the boxing star has openly discussed in recent years.
Legendary Career and Ongoing Legacy
Frank Bruno retired from boxing in 1996 after his high-profile bout with Mike Tyson. He is best remembered for his 1995 WBC world title win over Oliver McCall at Wembley, a moment still celebrated by fans across the UK.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of that historic victory, with tributes and well-wishes pouring in for the enduring sporting icon and mental health advocate.
