Multiple Fires on Brighton Grass Bank Believed to Be Deliberate

Emergency services were called to multiple suspected arson attacks in Whitehawk, Brighton, on Monday evening after flames and smoke were seen rising from a grass bank near Haybourne Road.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service received reports at 9:07pm of several fires involving trees and dry grassland. Two fire crews—one from Roedean and another from Preston Circus—responded to the incident.

Fires Believed to Be Deliberately Set

A fire service spokesperson confirmed:

“Crews used one hose reel jet and one wildfire beater to extinguish the fires. There were no casualties reported and the fires were believed to have been started deliberately.”

The scene, which created dramatic visuals of smoke drifting across the Whitehawk area, was brought under control swiftly, preventing further spread into nearby properties or woodland.

Residents Concerned, Police Investigation Expected

Local residents reported seeing emergency vehicles and flashing lights at the scene for over an hour. Many voiced concern over the growing trend of deliberate fires in the area, especially during hot, dry summer conditions when vegetation is more vulnerable.

With the incident now believed to be arson, Sussex Police are expected to open a formal investigation. While no arrests have yet been made, authorities are urging witnesses to come forward.
