A heartbreaking tragedy has rocked Kent College Canterbury after an 18-year-old pupil was found dead in his boarding house late Monday night. The senior school has shut its doors to day pupils today as the community reels from the loss.
Boarding Pupil Dies Suddenly
Police were called to the private school on Whitstable Road just before 11pm following a medical emergency. Despite the efforts of paramedics, the young man was confirmed dead at the scene.
“We are deeply saddened by the death of one of our boarding pupils on November 17. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family, friends and our wider school community.” – Kent College Canterbury statement
The school says it is now supporting pupils and families during this devastating time. Senior school day pupils will not attend classes today, allowing time for everyone to process the loss and grieve together.
Support Measures in Place
In a message to parents, teacher Mark Turnbull praised the pupil’s positive attitude and achievements at the school. He confirmed all pupils and boarding students will have access to wellbeing support, counselling, and adult listeners.
“Given the magnitude of the tragedy, we have cancelled school for the day to give the whole community some time to come to terms with the tragic loss,” he said.
Kent College Junior School remains open, with appropriate support offered to those affected.
Police Treat Death as Non-Suspicious
Kent Police confirmed officers attended the scene alongside paramedics. The 18-year-old’s death is not being treated as suspicious. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Kent College Canterbury is a co-educational boarding and day school founded in 1885, educating over 500 pupils across five senior school houses.
