Man Jailed for Luring and Raping Woman After Offering “Good Samaritan” Lift
A 33-year-old man from Southampton has been locked up for raping a woman he tricked into his van under the guise of a helpful driver. Shafiullah Zahid preyed on a vulnerable 23-year-old woman after a night out, promising to get her safely home.
Predatory Attack in Southampton
It all started in the early hours of July 22, 2018. The woman had been out drinking with friends but got separated and was left stranded with no cash and a dying phone battery. Struggling to walk along Northam Road, Zahid pulled up in a white van and offered her a lift.
Thinking he was being kind, the woman accepted. Almost immediately, she sensed danger and texted a friend in panic. Zahid then drove her to an unknown location and forced her into the back of his van, where he repeatedly raped her.
Brave Victim Reports Attack – DNA Seals the Case
After the assault, the woman demanded to be taken home and tricked Zahid into dropping her nearby—but not at her true address. Before she escaped, Zahid tried to act innocent, even asking if she wanted his phone number. To get away, she accepted it and immediately reported the horrific ordeal to police.
Detective Constable Sue Hampton led the investigation. Using the phone number Zahid gave the victim and crucial DNA evidence, police quickly identified Zahid as the attacker.
Justice Served: Zahid Sentenced to Seven and a Half Years
Following a tense three-week trial at Southampton Crown Court, the jury found Zahid guilty of two counts of rape. Yesterday (February 9), he was sentenced to seven and a half years for each count, running concurrently.
“From the start, Zahid completely disregarded his crime and showed no remorse for the impact on this woman,” said the police. “We commend the woman’s courage for coming forward. Her bravery helped us put this predatory offender behind bars.”
Support Is Available for Victims of Sexual Assault
