Ex-school boss Russell Tillson jailed for historic abuse spanning two decades
Abuse claims from the 1980s lead to conviction
Russell Tillson, once a senior figure at Tonbridge School, was convicted at Maidstone Crown Court following a lengthy trial. The charges stem from abuse allegations dating back to the 1980s.
Investigation exposes decades of offences
The abuse came to light after victims reported Tillson to Kent Police in 2018. Officers uncovered evidence of offences committed over nearly 20 years, both in classrooms and on school premises.
Tillson exploited his position of power to manipulate pupils. In one shocking case, he hinted a student could secure a better university reference through “unconventional methods.”
Denying allegations until conviction
The 73-year-old from Dymchurch was arrested in October 2020. He called the allegations “fiction” during police interviews. Charged with multiple counts of indecent assault, Tillson denied wrongdoing until the trial added further charges.
The jury found him guilty on four counts, acquitting him on two others. On 1 September 2023, he was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison, plus a 15-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Police commend victims’ bravery
“Sex offenders like Tillson cause lifelong damage to their victims, many of whom suffer in silence,” said DC Josh Gearing from West Kent Vulnerability Investigation Team. “The victims here have shown tremendous courage. This sentence won’t erase their trauma, but it offers some measure of closure.”
“Kent Police will continue to investigate all non-recent abuse allegations thoroughly and bring offenders to justice.”
