Ipswich Man Jailed for 20 Years After Brutal Stabbing

Alexander Cornell, 27, from Britannia Road in Ipswich, was slammed with a 20-year prison sentence plus a five-year extended licence at Ipswich Crown Court on Thursday, 9 March.

Guilty of Attempted Murder

Cornell was found guilty of attempted murder on 23 January 2023 following a six-day trial at Ipswich Crown Court. The brutal attack happened on 4 July last year at Parkway multi-storey car park.

Officers rushed to the scene just before 2.30pm after reports that a 41-year-old man had been stabbed. The victim suffered three serious stab wounds to his back and neck, with the largest cut around three inches, causing muscle damage. He was rushed to West Suffolk Hospital for urgent treatment.

Obsession Sparks Violent Attack

The court heard Cornell had become dangerously obsessed with the victim’s partner, a 39-year-old woman he had worked with for five years. Despite being repeatedly told there was no chance of a relationship, Cornell bombarded her with gifts and stalked her to different gyms, moving whenever she changed location — without her telling him.

Cornell initially pleaded not guilty to attempted murder but admitted to wounding with intent and carrying a knife in public.

Police Praise Team Effort That Led to Conviction

Judge Levett commended the police for their “thorough investigative work.” Detective Constable Guy Mitchell said: “Seeing Cornell behind bars is extremely satisfying. It’s very fortunate the victim survived such a vicious attack.”

“This was an extremely nasty, violent, and premeditated assault. Cornell now has plenty of time to reflect on his actions.”

“Thanks to the victim and the swift response from officers at the scene. This conviction is the result of a real team effort, including digital support officers who analysed countless hours of CCTV and the forensic teams aiding the evidence.”
