Thug Gets 16 Years for Brutal Armed Robbery at Surrey Quays Store
Knife and Fake Gun Terrorise Early Morning Shopper
Edward Woodbridge, 43, of Ardgowan Road, Catford, was slammed with a hefty 16 years and three months behind bars at Inner London Crown Court last Thursday. The sentencing followed his conviction for an armed robbery that left a shop cashier with serious head, neck, and hand injuries.
Violent Morning Raid Turned Bloody
Back on 12 September 2019, just before 7am, Woodbridge cycled to a convenience store at the Sirius Building, Surrey Quays. While the shop was closed to the public, he barged in wielding a single-barrelled shotgun and a knife. He forced the cashier at gunpoint to open the safe – but when there was none, he demanded cash from the till.
In a desperate struggle, the 40-something victim grabbed Woodbridge’s knife, sparking a violent fight leaving the cashier with deep cuts that needed serious medical care but thankfully weren’t life-threatening.
Quick Getaway Fails Against Flying Squad Detective Work
- Woodbridge ripped off less than £250 and some cigarettes
- He sped off on his bike, parked strategically for a quick escape towards New Cross
- Police found he had planned the raid well in advance, scouting the store that morning
Captured and Convicted: Justice Served
Following a swift armed police operation, Woodbridge was arrested at his home on 1 November 2019. Charged with robbery, possession of a firearm while committing a Schedule 1 offence, threatening with a blade, and grievous bodily harm with intent, he was remanded in custody until his trial.
Detective Inspector Gail Lilley praised the victim’s brave quick thinking for potentially saving his own life, saying, “Woodbridge walked away with £234 and some cigarettes – a haul that’s cost him 16 years in prison.”
