Gun Nabbed in Bum-Bag at Children’s Day Carnival
A loaded firearm hidden in a bum-bag was seized by police during a security operation at Carnival. Jade Charles, 35, from Saltram Crescent, W9, appeared at Southwark Crown Court in September 2023. He pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition and was sentenced on Friday, 19 April.
Detective Praises Sharp Police Work
Detective Constable Andrew Payne from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command said: “The loaded firearm in Charles’ possession put innocent members of the public at risk on what is known as ‘Children’s Day’ at Carnival. Its recovery has no doubt prevented it from being used to commit violent offences on our streets.”
Live Surveillance Leads to Arrest
On 27 August 2023, officers monitoring the event noticed suspicious behaviour on live CCTV. The man was quickly identified and arrested nearby. DC Payne added: “This was an excellent example of officers painstakingly viewing live images and reading body language. In this case, it has led to lives potentially being saved.”
