Callous Killer Jailed for Life Over Pensioner’s Brutal Murder
John Swannack, 59, from Accrington, has been sentenced to life behind bars with a minimum of 30 years after the ruthless murder of 79-year-old Bill Howard. Judge Robert Altham handed down the sentence at Preston Crown Court, ensuring Swannack won’t be eligible for parole anytime soon.
Gruesome Murder Shocks Accrington
Emergency services were called to St James Street, Accrington, just before 2pm on August 28 last year after reports raised concerns for Bill Howard’s welfare. They found the pensioner dead at the scene with serious head injuries and multiple stab wounds. Evidence showed Bill had been subjected to a brutal, sustained attack – including having an accelerant poured on him.
A post-mortem confirmed Bill died from fatal head and chest injuries. Detectives launched a murder inquiry and pieced together his final days. CCTV caught Swannack leaving Bill’s home on August 24 carrying a black bin bag and walking stick – a time believed Bill was already dead. Shockingly, Swannack then used Bill’s bank card multiple times following the murder, until his arrest on August 29.
Serial Fraudster Targeted Vulnerable Victims
The investigation uncovered a pattern of callous thefts. Swannack had also scammed £2,360 from a vulnerable, housebound ex-neighbour in July. On August 16, he was caught on camera withdrawing £350 from another vulnerable man’s account, stealing his wallet too.
On January 12, Swannack admitted to the murder, two thefts, and three fraud offences.
DCI Allen Davies said: “Swannack is a callous and manipulative individual who deliberately targeted elderly and vulnerable people to fund his expensive crack cocaine habit.”
“Bill Howard couldn’t have been more different. He was a kind, quiet, unassuming man who lived a simple life without bothering anybody. I cannot and do not want to imagine what he went through in those final hours at Swannack’s wicked hands.”
“I welcome the sentence, which reflects the gravity of Swannack’s crimes and the danger he posed. My thoughts remain with Bill’s family, especially his brother Jack.”
“Credit must go to my colleagues for their dedication and high-quality investigation, which left Swannack no choice but to admit his horrendous acts.”
Family Pay Heartfelt Tribute to ‘Gentle’ Bill Howard
Bill’s brother Jack Howard said: “Bill and I grew up close as brothers. Everyone who knew Bill knew what a kind and gentle man he was — he wouldn’t hurt a fly.”
“Life hadn’t been easy for Bill. He raised his son alone after his wife died young, and later suffered the heartbreak of losing his son as a young adult. Despite living apart, we kept in touch and shared many good times together. Those moments are gone forever.”
Two other men, aged 55 and 56, initially arrested on suspicion of murder, have been released with no further action.
