Peterborough Man Jailed for Choking and Coercive Control
David Barrett, 40, was reported to police on September 7 after a relative alerted officers that he had attacked a woman he lived with.
Attack Followed Ugly Argument
Police visited their home in Davis Place, Peterborough, and discovered Barrett had grabbed the woman by the neck following a row over something she did. The victim later revealed a history of abuse, including verbal assaults and a previous strangulation in July.
Victim Secretly Recorded Abuse
The brave woman secretly filmed some of the attacks and snapped photos of her injuries as evidence. Barrett was arrested but initially denied the claims, insisting the only violence was when he pushed her away in self-defence.
Guilty Plea Lands Barrett Behind Bars
Confronted with video proof, Barrett admitted his actions were “unacceptable.” He appeared at Peterborough Crown Court and pleaded guilty to coercive control and two counts of intentional strangulation.
On Thursday, the court sentenced Barrett to two years and six months in prison for his crimes.
