Met PC Sacked for Punching Woman During Arrest
PC Shanoor Ali, part of the Met’s South West Basic Command Unit, faced a misconduct hearing from February 22-24 over claims he punched a woman during a police operation.
Incident in Tooting Sparks Shock
The alleged assault happened on June 27, 2021, when PC Ali and other officers attended an address in Tooting. A female member of the public was present at the scene. It is claimed PC Ali struck her before she was arrested. The case against the woman was later dropped.
Gross Misconduct Proven
After weighing the evidence, the panel ruled PC Ali’s actions amounted to gross misconduct. This serious breach means he will no longer serve as a police officer.
Senior Police Speak Out
Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland, South West BCU commander, said: “This matter will clearly be of great concern to our community, and rightly so. I can only imagine the trauma, and physical impact on the woman concerned, at the hands of a police officer. I am shocked by what happened.”
“Police officers do need to use force in some instances, but it is clear that PC Ali went way beyond what was proportionate in this incident. It is right that he has been held to account for his actions and will now no longer be a police officer.”
PC Ali Barred from Policing and Related Work
Former PC Ali will be added to the College of Policing’s Barred List. Names on this list cannot work for any police force, local policing bodies like PCCs, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, or His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire Services.
