Quick-Thinking Victim Catches Burglar Red-Handed in Aylesham
Burglar Poses as Fisherman to Gain Entry
On 2 December 2019, a man in Aylesham had a close call when a stranger knocked on his door, pretending to sell fishing gear. The homeowner politely refused but soon heard his back door slam. Checking the conservatory, he discovered his wallet, cash, and bank cards had been stolen.
Victim Tracks Thief Using Banking App
Not wasting any time, the quick-witted victim monitored his banking app and spotted unauthorised transactions. Racing to the shop where his cards were being used, he recognised the man who had visited his house. With help from members of the public, the thief was caught and held until police arrived.
Burglar Gets Jail Time for Burglary and Fraud
Karl Armitage, 43, from St Albans Road, Canterbury, pleaded guilty at Canterbury Crown Court on 13 August 2020 to burglary and two counts of fraud. He was sentenced to two years and one month behind bars.
“Entering someone’s home and stealing their property can result in people not feeling safe in their own property. Thankfully, in this instance, the quick-thinking actions of the victim allowed us to arrest Armitage and put forward a compelling case,” said Detective Constable Kerry Akast.
“He had no other option but to admit his crimes and I hope the custodial sentence will give him time to reflect on his actions.”
