Knife-Wielding Shop Thief Nabbed and Caged for Over Five Years

A ruthless robber who threatened shop staff with a knife and a screwdriver during two terrifying hold-ups in Nottingham has been slammed with a hefty jail term of five years and seven months.

Wine and Coffee Snatched with Deadly Threats

On 1 June 2020, 33-year-old Naveed Butt stormed into the Best One shop at the Texaco petrol station on Meadow Lane. He casually stuffed bottles of wine into a carrier bag and walked out without paying. When two staff dared to follow, Butt brandished a knife and scared them off.

Just four days later, he struck again at the Co-op in the Bridgeway Centre, The Meadows. Snatching jars of coffee, Butt pulled out a screwdriver to threaten a staff member and then leapt over a barrier to flee, leaving without paying once more.

Prolific Offender Brought to Justice

Butt, from Kirkby Gardens, The Meadows, eventually pleaded guilty to robbery, theft, carrying a bladed article, and possession of an offensive weapon in public. He was also busted for breaching a suspended sentence.

The court hammered him with a 40-month sentence for robbery, and consecutive stints of six and 21 months for weapon possession and breaching the suspended order. Additional concurrent sentences covered theft and offensive weapon possession.

Police Praise Brave Victims and Pledge to Tackle Weapon Crime

“Thankfully none of the victims were injured during these incidents but they left the shop workers feeling very scared,” said Detective Constable Matt Butler of Nottinghamshire Police. “Nottinghamshire Police treats weapon-enabled crime and robbery extremely seriously and we are absolutely committed to driving down weapon-enabled violence wherever it presents.

“I’d like to praise the victims for their bravery in reporting these incidents and their co-operation throughout our investigation. I hope they can take some comfort now that we’ve managed to remove a prolific offender from our streets.”
