Leeds Burglar Caught After Tunnel Heist
Josef Ziga, 51, from Leeds, was slammed with a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence at Leeds Crown Court on Thursday, 20 July. The charge? Breaking into a neighbour’s home — by tunnelling through the wall.
Tunnelled Through Brickwork to Steal Tools
The court heard Ziga removed brickwork separating his home and an adjoining property to sneak into the cellar. Between 11 and 16 January, he made multiple trips, swiping power tools and hand tools.
The thefts were spotted by the property owner, who quickly alerted Leeds District Police. Ziga was arrested soon after but brazenly blamed someone else for the crimes.
Police Smash His Alibi, Lock Him Up
Detectives were suspicious of his dodgy story. Their hard work disproved his blames and forced him to own up. Detective Sergeant Seb Horan blasted Ziga’s shameless actions:
“Not only has he tunnelled into a neighbour’s address and stolen from him, but he has then tried to blame other parties to avoid a prison sentence.”
“The fact Ziga has pleaded guilty is a testament to the thorough efforts of the investigating officer, DC 597 Booth. His meticulous investigation demolished Ziga’s claims, leaving him no choice but to plead guilty.”
Police urged the public to stay vigilant. DS Horan added:
“Burglary worries communities deeply. We assess every report for investigation opportunities. If you see suspicious behaviour or know about burglars operating locally, contact your neighbourhood policing team.”
“If you spot a burglary in progress, ring 999 immediately so officers can respond fast.”
