A Suspect Wanted For A Serious Assault Was Apprehended After Thanet's District Commander Went Out On Patrol With His Response Officers.

Chase and Catch: Trainers Thief Nabbed in Thanet

Chief Inspector Matthew Smith joined Thanet’s Local Policing Team 1 on a high-octane patrol during the National Response Policing Week of Action on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. The week honours the bravery and skill of officers who are often first on the scene of tricky incidents.

Trainers Swipe Sparks Foot Chase

While patrolling Westwood Cross, officers got a tip-off from the public about a trainer theft from a local store. Ch Insp Smith and PC James Absolon sprang into action, chasing the suspect on foot. Thanks to quick radio updates, backup was ready to intercept.

The thief was caught in the Quantock Gardens area just minutes later, still clutching a pair of trainers with tags intact. A 27-year-old man from Margate was arrested on suspicion of theft.

Serious Assault Charges Added

Further investigations revealed the man was wanted over a serious assault case from March 2022. He was also charged with threatening to kill and causing grievous bodily harm.

“It was a pleasure to go out with my officers to see how they deal with the many different calls they receive,” said Ch Insp Smith. “It’s amazing to see the hard work that goes into keeping Thanet safe. Their professionalism, dedication, and energy in serving the people of the district is truly inspiring.”
