Third Robber Jailed Over Violent Security Van Heist in Medway

A third man has been locked up after a brazen robbery targeting a security van driver during a cash delivery in Medway.

Robbery on Rainham High Street

Daniel Gurley, 38, from Stoke Newington Church Street, London, joined forces with two others to snatch a cash box on the morning of 25 September 2019. The trio struck outside a bank on Rainham High Street.

Gurley denied the robbery but, after a four-day trial at Maidstone Crown Court in July 2020, a jury found him guilty. He was sentenced to five years behind bars.

Accomplices Already Sent Down

  • Warren Young, 36, of Cavendish Avenue, Gillingham, bit the bullet early and pleaded guilty. He got four and a half years.
  • Getaway driver Samnit Sidhu, 24, from Cromwell Road, Grays, Essex, admitted to the robbery and multiple drug charges. He’s doing five years and three months.

How Cops Cracked the Case

The robbery was reported at 10.35am after the driver, unharmed, alerted bank staff. He’d just unloaded a cash box when Young approached him. Gurley was ready nearby as the duo snatched the cash and fled to a waiting black Nissan Qashqai, driven by Sidhu.

Police couldn’t ID the robbers from CCTV, but smart detective work trailed the getaway car using ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) technology and mobile phone data.

The car was stopped in Cromwell Road, Grays, at 7.20pm the same day. Officers found Sidhu with a bag containing cocaine, cannabis, weighing scales, around £3,000 cash, and a can of CS spray.

Young was arrested the next day. Cops uncovered £10,000 cash hidden at his home.

Further digging linked Gurley to the crew. His DNA was discovered on a glove in Sidhu’s car, confirming his role.

Detective Praises Tech and Teamwork

“Gurley was an active participant, working with Young and Sidhu to plan and carry out this attack on an unsuspecting driver going about his daily business,” said Detective Constable Mark Froome.

“Without ANPR and mobile phone analysis, nabbing these men would have been far tougher. Gurley lied through trial but the jury saw the truth. He’s now heading to jail along with Young and Sidhu.”
