Gambling Addict Scott Newland Scams Friends and Family Out of £30,000
Scott Newland fleeced eleven victims out of a whopping £30,467 over just six months. He spun heart-wrenching lies, claiming his father had died and he needed cash for funeral costs. He also tricked people by saying he was buying his ex-partner’s share of a house.
Fake Computer Sales and Shocking Betrayal
Newland didn’t stop there. He posted fake ads for computers, collecting money for gadgets that never showed up. To appear legit, he even used a redacted copy of his partner’s police warrant card—without her consent!
CPS Hits Back: ‘A Tremendous Breach of Trust’
Jason Howells from the CPS blasted Newland’s actions: “Scott Newland lied to his partner and friends, using their confidence in him to gain considerable amounts of money. The use of his partner’s identification was a tremendous breach of their personal trust and shows how deeply his gambling addiction controlled him.”
The CPS built a rock-solid case, leading to Newland’s guilty plea at the first hearing. On 25 March 2021, he was slapped with a 28-month prison sentence.
