Mum Jailed for Horrific Scalding of Toddler Gracie
Katie Crowder deliberately burned her 19-month-old daughter Gracie at their Mansfield home last March, a court heard. Prosecutors revealed the toddler suffered burns covering 65% of her body and was left untreated for at least an hour.
Burns Too Severe to Be Accidental
Experts testified Gracie’s severe injuries couldn’t have happened by accident. Crowder, 26, from Wharmby Avenue, Mansfield, denied murder but was found guilty earlier this month following a trial at Nottingham Crown Court.
Judge Hands Down Heavy Sentence
On 1 June, Judge Jeremy Baker sentenced Crowder to a minimum of 21 years in prison. He described the incident as “distressing” and “tragic.”
“It is apparent from the jury’s verdict that you poured a significant quantity of scalding water on Gracie’s face and body,” the judge said.
“Her suffering would not have ended quickly—she endured pain and distress for an hour or more.”
This horrific case shines a spotlight on child cruelty and the importance of swift intervention when children are in danger.
