Two Albanian Men Charged in Shocking Kent Hit-and-Run That Killed 89-Year-Old

Horrific Crash on Busy Gillingham Road

Thomas Wallace, 89, was brutally struck by a grey Mercedes estate on the A289 Gads Hill in Gillingham just after midday on Monday. In a chilling turn, his body was dragged on the car’s roof for over a mile before emergency crews discovered it.

A passing postman and a local hero tried to save him, but tragically, medics declared Mr Wallace dead at the scene.

Suspects Flee But Are Caught

The grey Mercedes was found nearby, but the two men inside took off on foot. Police arrested Albert Matraxhiu, 28, from Edgware, North London, and Erald Paci, 29, from Chatham, Kent.

  • Matraxhiu faces multiple charges: death by dangerous driving, driving without insurance, failing to stop or report an accident, and obstructing justice.
  • Paci is charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Both suspects remain in custody and are set to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on January 30.

Immigration Status Sparks Fresh Questions

The identities of the accused have raised eyebrows. Paci was previously deported and is waiting on a Home Office decision, while Matraxhiu faces possible deportation if convicted.

Major Emergency Response on Scene

The horrific crash triggered a huge emergency reaction. Over 20 police, fire, and ambulance units rushed to the scene. An air ambulance and police helicopter also joined the frantic efforts.

Drones and police dogs scoured the area during the investigation. Road closures caused significant delays for local drivers, lasting until 6pm.
