Arsonist Jason Scott Jailed Over Horrific Dover Road Flat Blaze

Jason Scott pleaded guilty to arson after setting fire to a flat in Canterbury’s Dover Road area on 30 August 2020. The 48-year-old was sentenced to four years and six months behind bars at Canterbury Crown Court on 23 June 2021. He will also serve an additional three and a half years on licence after release.

Fire Could Have Been Catastrophic

Kent Police and Fire and Rescue teams rushed to the scene after a victim’s relative dialled 999. Scott, who was known to the flat’s occupant, had been asked to leave but refused. Instead, he went into a bedroom and ignited clothing using a cigarette.

The flat quickly filled with smoke, forcing the victim and her relative to evacuate. They helped neighbours, including elderly residents, to escape before firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Serious Damage and Tough Restraining Order

The fire seriously damaged the flat and affected the one above it. Scott was arrested at the scene. A 10-year restraining order bans him from contacting the victim or her relative and from visiting the property. Any breach could send him straight back to jail.

Police Praise Victims and Urge Others to Speak Out

Detective Constable Tony Edwards said: “Scott put the victim, her relative, and her neighbours in danger with his reckless actions. I praise them for getting themselves and others to safety and raising the alarm.”
