Isle of Wight Fights Back Against Scammers!

The Isle of Wight council is cracking down on scams this June for National Scams Awareness Month. They want YOU to become a ‘Friend Against Scams’ and help protect the island from crooks.

Join the Million-Strong Scam-Busting Squad

The Isle of Wight Against Scams Partnership (IWASP), led by the council, is backing the National Trading Standards Scams Team’s push to recruit one million ‘Friends Against Scams’ by 2020. Island residents are urged to sign up now at friendsagainstscams.org.uk.

Top Island figures have already signed up, including MP Bob Seely, council leader Dave Stewart, chief executive John Metcalfe, and public protection supremo Tig Outlaw.

“Stand Up To Scammers,” Urges Bob Seely

“This initiative is about sharing a consistent message across the Island about staying safe in your own home and preventing yourself and others from becoming a victim of scams. I would urge residents to sign up to the scheme and encourage friends and neighbours to do so too, to make sure rogue traders and scammers understand that as a community, the Isle of Wight is standing up against this crime,” said Bob Seely, Isle of Wight MP.

Islandwide Scam Awareness and Support Network

Tig Outlaw, Cabinet member for public protection, revealed the Island’s multi-pronged approach:

  • Partnering with media to highlight new scams
  • Training local groups like the fire service, police, Age UK, Southern Housing, Action on Hearing Loss and Citizens Advice to spot scams
  • Offering support for anyone worried about scams

“Signing up as a Friend Against Scams could stop someone you love from losing thousands to criminals,” Outlaw warned.
