Met Police Shooter in Chris Kaba Case to Be Named March 1
The Metropolitan Police marksman who fatally shot Chris Kaba, 24, will finally have his identity revealed on March 1, ahead of his murder trial. Until now, the officer—known only as NX121 in court—was protected by strict reporting restrictions.
Judge Delays Naming Officer Until March
Judge Mark Lucraft KC, the Recorder of London, had planned to lift reporting restrictions sooner. Initially, the officer’s identity was expected to be disclosed at the end of January. However, at an Old Bailey hearing last Friday, the judge pushed the announcement back to March 1 after reviewing sensitive “intelligence material” and considering the risks involved.
Trial Date Pushed Back to October
Alongside the delay in naming the officer, NX121’s murder trial has been rescheduled. Originally set for September 9, the trial will now begin on October 1. A High Court judge is expected to oversee the proceedings.
Strict Privacy Measures to Remain in Place
Throughout the trial, publication bans will prevent any photos of the officer or details about his home address from being released. Judge Lucraft stressed there is no “real or immediate risk to life,” but held back the officer’s name to ensure safety measures for him and his family can be put in place ahead of the court case.
The Fatal Incident
The tragic shooting happened during an armed police stop in Streatham Hill in September 2022. A single shot struck Chris Kaba in the head. So far, NX121 has not entered a plea to the murder charge.
