Brighton Man Locked Up for Brutal Abuse of Teen

A 20-year-old Brighton man has been slammed with a seven-year prison sentence after a harrowing campaign of violence and control over a teenage girl throughout 2024.

Zaine Reid, who has no fixed address, was convicted at Brighton Crown Court on 16 May for a string of violent crimes including rape and strangulation.

Months of Abuse Unveiled

The victim, a late-teen girl, bravely reported Reid in September 2024. She revealed a chilling pattern of abuse starting from February that year.

Reid’s twisted control tactics included:

  • Isolating her from friends and family
  • Tracking her with surveillance cameras
  • Emotional manipulation and threats of self-harm
  • Rape combined with terrifying strangulation, leaving her fearing for her life

After she ended the relationship, Reid hacked her social media accounts and deleted them to cut her off even further.

Intimidation Didn’t Stop Behind Bars

Even on remand, Reid tried to scare the victim into dropping the police investigation, earning an extra charge of witness intimidation.

On 18 March 2025, he was found guilty of:

  • Rape
  • Intentional strangulation
  • Coercive and controlling behaviour
  • Actual bodily harm (ABH)
  • Witness intimidation

Police Hail Victim’s Bravery

Detective Constable Ryan Dale praised the victim’s incredible strength:

“I want to thank the victim for her remarkable courage in the face of Reid’s abuse and intimidation. She proved he couldn’t control her, and now he’s behind bars. Sussex is a safer place because of her.”

He urged other victims to come forward:

“If you are suffering abuse, there is help and an escape. Report it discreetly online, via 101, or dial 999 in an emergency. We’ll support you all the way.”
