Two Men Jailed Over Armed St Leonards Incident
Two men have been convicted following a terrifying armed incident in St Leonards. Cornel Florea, 21, from Gravesend, Kent, appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on January 31 and pleaded guilty to affray and carrying a knife in public. Meanwhile, Robert Murphy, 33, homeless, also pleaded guilty to affray at the same court.
Both men were remanded in custody and will face sentencing at Lewes Crown Court on Monday, February 27.
Shots Fired and Knives Brandished in St Leonards
The drama unfolded on the evening of Tuesday, January 24, when police received multiple reports of shots fired at a vehicle on Theaklen Drive at around 7.10pm. Minutes later, officers were alerted to a man carrying a firearm and others armed with knives near Stonehouse Drive.
Armed police, backed by specialist teams from neighbouring forces and a National Police Air Service helicopter, quickly swooped in to contain the situation and protect the public. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Massive Weapons Haul and Multiple Arrests
In the days following the incident, police carried out four search warrants. This led to several arrests and the seizure of an arsenal of weapons, including machetes, blank firing pistols, ammunition, and batons. Florea and Murphy were arrested on January 30 and charged shortly after.
“Sussex Police responded quickly with support from other forces,” said Detective Inspector Sharon Ford. “We’ve successfully removed dangerous weapons that could have been used in Hastings. I’d like to thank the public for their swift reporting, which helped prevent injuries.”
Chief Inspector Jay Mendis-Gunasekera, Hastings District Commander, added: “This fast-paced investigation was only possible due to excellent teamwork and community cooperation. Our priority is to keep Hastings safe for residents and visitors alike. Thanks to neighbouring forces and our officers for their swift action.”
