Brighton Man Caught Dumping Rubbish on Camera
Mark Bott, 36, of 32 Gordon Road, Brighton, has pleaded guilty to fly-tipping at Brighton Magistrates. He was caught on CCTV illegally offloading construction waste at High Park Farm, Ditchling Road, and Denton Drive in Hollingbury.
Shameful Dumping Caught on CCTV
Footage shows Bott reversing a tipper truck down a muddy lane into the farm. He bizarrely tosses some branches into his lorry while covering his face. Bott then glances at the CCTV camera and his deliberately obscured number plate.
He lifts the hydraulic tailgate of his lorry, dumping rubbish including a child’s push bike and household doors onto the ground, then drives off with the tailgate still open.
Justice Served — But No Jail for Bott
Bott was tracked down after environmental enforcement officers and Sussex Police examined the CCTV and identified his distinctive vehicle. At court, he admitted the offences, including one at Denton Drive.
Given his financial troubles, magistrates spared him a hefty fine, instead issuing a 12-month community order. He must also pay £85 in costs and a £95 victim surcharge. His lorry has been impounded.
“Fly-tipping is a serious offence causing harm to wildlife and costing the council large sums to clear up,” said Max Smith, the council’s environmental enforcement manager. “Since installing mobile CCTV and number plate recognition cameras, we’ve caught almost 70 offenders.”
