Bus Driver Who Killed Nine-Year-Old After Drug Use Has Jail Time Hiked
Drugged Driver’s Sentence Boosted After Tragic Crash
Martin Asolo-Ogugua, 23, from Peckham, has had his jail sentence upped after killing a nine-year-old girl while behind the wheel under the influence of cannabis. The Court of Appeal acted after the Solicitor General stepped in, increasing his prison term from four years to six years and eight months.
Fatal Crash Details
The heartbreaking incident happened on the morning of 3 August 2024 in South London. While most passengers escaped with minor injuries, young Ada suffered catastrophic injuries and sadly died two days later in hospital.
Driver Caught Drugged and Drowsy
A roadside drugs test confirmed Asolo-Ogugua had smoked cannabis the night before the deadly crash. CCTV footage inside the bus showed the driver yawning, opening the window for fresh air, and frequently closing his eyes, moments before the crash.
Solicitor General Speaks Out
“Martin Asolo-Ogugua’s selfishness needlessly took the life of a young girl, causing irreparable damage to a family. I welcome the court’s decision to increase his sentence and would like to extend my deepest sympathies to Ada’s family.” – Lucy Rigby KC MP, Solicitor General
What Is the Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme?
The Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme lets victims, their families, prosecutors, or the public ask for a sentence to be reviewed if it seems too light. This case was referred to the Attorney General’s Office under the scheme, leading to the harsher punishment.
