Hero Mum Saves Woman from Suicide on Busy Essex Bridge
When Caitlan Smith spotted a young woman standing dangerously on the wrong side of railings on a footbridge over a busy road, she didn’t hesitate. The quick-thinking mum rushed over to see what was wrong – and her bravery helped save a life.
Commended by Essex Police Chief
Caitlan was on her way home early one freezing, dark November morning when she noticed the woman ahead of her. “I saw a movement and backtracked. It was lucky because I had already walked past without noticing her,” Caitlan recalls.
Despite the woman saying little, Caitlan kept talking to her, sensing trouble. “I told her I’d have to call the police. The woman on the other end of the line was so kind and guided me through everything, telling me to keep her calm and chatting.”
When officers arrived, Caitlan made sure the woman was ready to accept help before they approached. The police and Caitlan then safely led her off the bridge. She was taken by ambulance and is now getting the help she needs.
Essex Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington praised Caitlan’s “extraordinary” bravery. “Not everyone would have stepped up in such a dangerous and potentially tragic situation. Her quick actions saved a life.”
Caitlan’s Courage Honoured
“I received my Commendation with mixed feelings. It was a horrible situation but very rewarding. I hope I’ve made a difference to her life,” Caitlan said.
