East London Man Jailed for Daesh Support After Online Tip-Off
A 42-year-old East Londoner has been locked up after a Met Police investigation exposed his extremist posts backing Daesh. Kawsor Miah openly expressed his radical Islamist views and cheered on terrorist violence online, sparking alarm.
Public Tip-Off Sparks Major Counter-Terror Probe
An anonymous member of the public reported Miah’s social media activity to police, triggering a crackdown by the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command and the specialist Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit (CTIRU).
Miah was arrested in March 2022. Following trial at Kingston Crown Court, he was found guilty on multiple counts, including encouraging terrorism and backing a proscribed terror group.
On 21 December, Miah was sentenced to five years in prison, with another three years on licence.
Police Urge Public to Report Suspicious Online Content
Commander Dominic Murphy, Met Counter Terrorism: “Our investigation began thanks to a concerned member of the public who knew Miah’s posts were dangerous. They did the right thing by alerting us. This vital info helped secure his conviction. It shows how public action is key to fighting terror.”
Since 2015, the Met’s CTIRU has removed over 322,000 pieces of extremist content online, much of it flagged by vigilant citizens.
